5 Effective Ways to Keep Cut Flowers Fresh for Days
Receiving a flower bouquet as a gift is certainly a delight. Unfortunately, cut flowers have a relatively short shelf life if not cared for properly.
Here are 5 secret tricks from our professional florist to make your flowers last longer:
- Cut the Stems at an Angle: Trim the ends of the stems about 1-2 cm at a 45-degree angle using sharp scissors. This increases the water absorption area.
- Remove the Bottom Leaves: Ensure no leaves are submerged in the water inside the vase, as rotting leaves can trigger bacterial growth.
- Change the Water Every Day: Clean water is the main key. Do not forget to wash the vase before refilling it with fresh water.
- Provide Extra Nutrition: You can use packaged flower food, or mix a little sugar and a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar into the vase water.
- Keep Away from Direct Sunlight and Fruits: Cut flowers prefer cool places. Avoid placing them near ripe fruits because the ethylene gas produced by the fruits can accelerate the wilting of the flowers.
By applying the steps above, a flower bouquet from your loved one can last up to a week or even more!
